Now, whenever you want to make a new thumbnail, you open up your template, use File>Open As Layers or some other method to get a layer with the photo/screencap/whatever on it, then move that layer under your white + text layer so it gets covered, then File>Export as a PNG or something. This will remove the selected area and leave you with a transparent hole. Now, press Ctrl + X OR use the menu item Edit>Cut. This will let you make parts of the layer transparent. Right click on the layer and choose "Add Alpha Channel". The remaining selection should be the original lassoed shape minus the white part, i.e. Using the magic wand/fuzzy select tool click on the white part to remove it from the selection. Make sure you select all of the photo and none of the text/logo stuff. Using the lasso/free select tool, click around to make a selection that includes all of the photo and a little bit of the white on each side.
